Xiaomi Mi Max Review

Xiaomi has now been a household name when it comes to the high-end smartphones. In fact, the firm has rightly followed the best ever strategy of launching the budget smartphones and capturing the market. Later on, they moved to the high-end devices. Xiaomi Mi Max is the first phablet from the house of Xiaomi.

Xiaomi Mi Max Full Review

The Max smartphones – that is a name coined for the devices which have screens larger than 6.4 inches- always are forced to be compromised in some way while being monsters. Xiaomi Mi Max also is not an exception to this. We will attempt to explain this mammoth device in a finer detail.

Look and feel

The phone is bigger, nay huge – yet does not feel that way. As is evident with the Xiaomi devices ever since they launched their first device, the device is sturdy in its build. It feels quite light even with its larger size. The huge size makes it not comfortable for one handed usage.

The Aluminium construction of the device offers it a premium look. The power button is perfectly placed so that you can easily access it even with its huge size. The side bezels are quite smaller. The phone has a black border around the screen. The physical dimensions read 173.1 x 88.3 x 7.5 mm and the device weighs 203 grams. The smartphone is available in Black, Gold and White.

Display

The 6.4-inch screen size is what brings the device in the phablets range. The extra large 6.4 screen will make you feel elated and annoyed at the same time. You will definitely fall in love with the huge screen estate as you watch videos on it or play games. At the same time, you will wonder how will you use it in the day to day life. The screen has a full HD resolution at 1080p.

Xiaomi Mi Max Display quality

The pixel density reads 342 ppi which are quite good given its screen to body ratio. The display is quite good enough. You can be sure of comfortable viewing angles. The color reproduction is quite natural. The images and text on the device impress and sharper. The display settings are available that would let you adjust color and contrast. The MiUI 7 customisation lets you opt for Reading Mode.
Sunlight legibility is average, though. The full HD resolution on such a huge screen gives rise to issues with respect to the outdoor visibility. You have Reduced Contrast Sunlight Mode that may be helpful in getting a comfortable outdoor visibility, though. And yes, you have Gorilla Glass 4 protection. That is something that is quite unexpected at this price point.

Hardware and performance

The Xiaomi Mi Max is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor. There is also a low priced variant with Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor. The Snapdragon 650 processor is a hexacore one with a maximum clock speed of 1.4 GHz, while Snapdragon 652 is an Octacore processor with 1.8 GHz.

You get access to 32 GB of internal storage capacity. Coupled with it is 3 GB RAM which should be a great addition to all your multitasking requirements. There is an expandable storage option up to 256 GB. However, please note that you will have to sacrifice the dual SIM functionality if you wish to use the expandable storage option.
In terms of performance, the device excels in whatever you throw at it. The capable processor coupled with a support from an able software lets your apps launch and perform at ease. The display ably supports battery saving. The apps do not suffer from any kind of stuttering.

Xiaomi Specifications
Even the high-intensity games perform quite well without any sort of stuttering or lags. Resource hungry games like Real racing work quite great. The call quality is quite awesome. The fingerprint scanner on the Xiaomi Mi Max works like a charm. The sensor is much accurate. It is a little faster than the other high-end devices like Nexus 6P.
We could not help feeling a little strange about the return of microUSB port on Xiaomi Mi Max. Xiaomi was the first manufacturer to opt for the USB Type-C port when it was first introduced. Mi Max retreating to microUSB looks like a step backwards. Maybe Xiaomi has its own strategy behind this move.

Camera

For that matter, almost all Max smartphones suffer from better camera experience. Xiaomi appears to be an exception among such devices. It comes with a 16 MP rear camera that produces some really great images. The color reproduction and quality of the images shot are quite trustworthy. The camera is equipped with the case of most of the mid-range smartphone cameras, the image quality at low light is a reason for concern.

The camera lacks Optical Image Stabilisation. However, the daylight shots come quite great. The autofocus consists of phase detection but does not work at times. The camera fails to lock into focus. It could be an issue, though such situations come across only once in a while.
The camera can shoot full HD videos that look great. It can also shoot great videos in 4K as well. If you are persistent, you can be sure of getting some good snaps. The camera has a f/2.0 aperture and a dual tone flash. It works nice, but the huge issue that makes your camera unreliable is the autofocus which fails when most needed. Mi Max comes with a 5 MP camera on the front that shoots some decent selfie shots.

Software

The Xiaomi Mi Max runs on Android Marshmallow 6.0. The customisation is provided by MiUI 7.0. The MiUI 7 skin is far from stock Android. The MiUI 8.0 is rolling out soon. The MiUi7, for now, resembles iOS.It can be a good choice for those who look for a greater degree of customisation. There are many great features like the ability to restrict data usage for selective apps. The UI is quite responsive.

The best part of the UI is it receives updates on a weekly basis. That would mean you will keep getting frequent bug fixes.Having said that, we would wish to state that the UI is not without issues. There are frequent problems with Google apps. Google Now on Tap is not integrated. The phone attempts to give a Google-less experience. Android without proper Google integration can be a problem for most of us.

Battery and other features

The Xiaomi Mi Max is powered by a mammoth 4850 mAh battery. Quick Charge feature is available out of the box. The battery can last almost a day quite easily. The connectivity features on the device are pretty standard. You get 4G connectivity on both the SIMs, though one of them doubles up as microSD card slot. You have to choose either an expandable storage or the dual SIM compatibility – you cannot use the both. Other connectivity options include WiFi on dual bands, Bluetooth 4.2 and GPS. Xiaomi is back to microUSB connection dumping USB Type-C port. There is an infraRed port as well.
