The rise of independent music is here. It’s now easier than ever to create great music without having to depend on a contract offered by a major record label.
Have you ever dreamt that one day you would make your own music? In this day and age, it’s easier than ever to produce music.
So whether you want to do it as a hobby or see yourself performing live one day, we encourage you to set up your own studio.
This guide will show you how to make your own music in the comfort of your own home.
The Guide on How to Make Your Own Music
The first thing to do is to decide which room in your house will become your recording studio. Ideally, you want one that you can have to yourself – whether that is your bedroom or the garage.
You also need to consider the size of the space. If you want collaborators and a whole set of instruments, then you want a room that is as big as possible. Otherwise, you should make sure that the room is confined so that it’s not easy for sound to travel out.
Once this has been decided, you have to look at the equipment:
Actually, the first thing to do is not to buy equipment! You need to first invest in the right software to record audio.
You can first try a free software program such as Audacity. If you are a Mac user, you already have a great software program called Garageband.
You can learn how to use Garageband here: https://setapp.com/how-to/use-garageband-on-mac
We suggest using one of these free options first. Once you become more acquainted with audio recording software, you can upgrade to a more sophisticated program.
You want to make sure that you have a great computer for recording audio. You have to remember that audio files will take up a lot of hard drive space. You also want a computer with fast RAM.
A laptop will suffice, but its always better to get a desktop computer as these usually have a stronger capacity. As your recording studio is stationery, there isn’t really a need to have a computer that you can take on the go.
While PC computers also work we recommend going to Mac computers. Mac computers are made for creative artists and we’ve already mentioned using Garageband. If and when you upgrade to more sophisticated software, you’ll find many of the best ones are available on Mac.
Get an Audio Interface
The next step is to get an audio interface. This interface lets you connect your instruments and microphones to the computer. This may be pricey – but if you are serious about recording audio, then you’ll soon realize that an internal microphone will not provide the best audio quality.
If you don’t want to rely on pre-recorded beats, you want to record them through instruments. An audio interface lets you connect your instruments and helps you create recorded beats and loops directly into your recording software.
It’s crucial to have a great pair of headphones when recording music. When you need to playback your music its best to hear them directly without distractions.
This can only happen if you have a great pair of headphones. We recommend Beats By Dre – as these are noise-canceling and let you hear every beat, so you get a proper idea of what your music sounds like. If you’re on a budget, there are great alternatives to beats.
If you ever want to take your music on the go and make others listen to it, you should provide them with your headphones. This way, your listeners also will have a great idea of what your music is supposed to sound like.
Don’t Forget About Microphones
As we discussed, an external microphone is crucial for recording and is a much better substitute for your computer’s internal microphone.
We also recommend keeping the microphone on a tall stand. This way you don’t need to hold onto the microphone while you are singing. You can also find a “splitter” to connect multiple microphones to the computer – which is what you need for performing duets or having backup singers.
As there are a variety of microphones available, make sure that you do your research on the best ones for recording vocals for music. Microphones used by podcasters are especially great for this type of recording.
You also need a great speaker or set of speakers to playback your audio. While there are times that you’ll need to listen with your headphones, there are also times when you need to blast your music on speakers!
If you ever decide to perform live, you want to know how your music sounds to a crowd. We suggest starting with one speaker to see how your music sounds. If you like it then buy at least two more of the same speaker.
While you want to record your own original music through instruments, it wouldn’t hurt to also invest in pre-recorded audio. You can purchase beats and other soundtracks through the internet or in audio packs. For example, Garageband comes with many pre-recorded instruments and lets you purchase additional music loops if you wish.
Audio packs are especially great if you are unable to reproduce a particular sound. If you have a guitarist but not a drummer, then you can add pre-recorded drum loops to your song. If you are a singer but cannot hire any musicians at all, you can create an entire soundtrack using audio loops.
You may also find pre-recorded vocals. So if you are looking for any backup vocals, humming, etc., then you can find them in an audio pack!
Go Out and Make Music!
Now that you know how to make your own music, you’re ready to go out and share your music with the world. Once you set up your home studio you’ll see how simple it is to record music and distribute it. We look forward to hearing your music!
